International Glaciological Society outing

Two half days (28-29 august) accompanying an IGS (International Glaciological Society) outing. Interesting and scary: by 2040, there might be nothing left of the Tsan Fleuron glacier above Les Diablerets. And then how will we store the water? At the moment most summer-time waters come from glacial melt waters infiltrating the karst, but when all the ice will have gone, it will be only snow melt and remaining aquifers, which may not be very large in a karstic environment... better find some other way of storing the water in the Alps, and fast!

The previous day I was leading an evening tour down in the valley, so I joined the group on the second day after their departure from the cabane des Diablerets. As I started down from the cable-car towards the hut, I saw them straight in front of me, at the same level as I was, moving up the scree towards the glacier.

Tavillons lons lons

On trouve dans les Alpes des toitures couvertes de tavillons, qui sont des tuiles faites en bois d'épicéa. Cette méthode de recouvrement est utilisée à nouveau, et de plus en plus, dans nos régions. Les tavillons s'usent plus ou moins vite en fonction du climat, de l'altitude et de l'orientation du pan de toit sur lequel ils sont posés. Les tavillons sur l'image que je vous propose ci-dessous sont déjà bien délabrés...mais quelle est cette étrange visiteuse qui semble posée sur le faîte du chalet?

Souvenir de printemps

Trois jours de balade au pied du Jura, en famille et en amis.

Les Mémises

Rapidos, quelques photos du tour de reconnoissance pour un client qui n'est jamais venu (une grosse boîte de la région vaudoise!), quel dommage messieurs-dames, jugez-en plutôt!

C't'ami Yves, photographe éclairé et éclairant (REGARDEZ!) était de la partie. Les photographes sont une race de randonneurs à part: 90% du poids de leur sac c'est du matos de photo:

Mountain shells

Did you know that in the Alps you can find sea shells?

That's because the rocks that form the mountains were originally sea bed sediments that contained sea-dwelling animals. The sediments hardened with time and then were thrust upwards and folded when the Alps were shaped by the collision of European and African continents some 35 million years ago (to make a long story short).

So now you can find shell-like creatures high up in the mountains: some are embedded in the rocks and are known as fossils; others come from all over the world to visit their ancestors and you can actually see them walking around on FEET.

Thanks to V from Rando Decouverte, I was lucky to be able to guide some of these shell visitors on a one day hike around the Col du Pillon area: here are a few pictures from that outing, a magnificent day in the Alps!

These shells were good walkers so we had time to hike up to the Palette d'Isenau (2170 m). Here's one shell reaching the final flowery ridge.

Beautiful Anemone pulsatilla (Pasque Flower) watch the shells as they roll carefully down the steep slopes of Palette.

From the other side

I'd like to post a few photos of an original outing we did with my friend RO at the end of the snow season: we were headed for the Mont Tendre (not unusual for me, I LOVE that mountain), but this time we started out from the bottom of the East slopes, which makes it a longer hike but also leads you through wild forests and past one of the best kept secrets of the Jura: the .... hoho! you thought you were getting a scoop there didn't you?

AnywayZZ, here are 3 pictures from that day, sometime in early April 2009.

Here's the view from the cliffs of ... (hohoho, almost!). Those are the trees we walked through. Like in a dream.


Out of the trees, RO is enjoying the hard snow and the bright sun light. It's spring time already, plenty of animal tracks, trees are green, eyes like slits and burning skin.


Almost there, the geodesic triangle sticks out against the sky. Some other hikers are already up there. Nice chat, french skiers actually over from the Risoux area, we shared a bottle of Jura white wine: the down-going went smoothly!

Ah mon beau, mon cool, mon cher vélo!

Je l'utilis(ais) tous les jours, il était mon ami, mon compagnon d'aventures, mon coursier moderne, mon tracteur à pédales, mon 4X4 à moi! Je lui avais acheté la plus belle selle au MONDE: une Brooks B17 en cuir de couleur miel.

C'est fini, on me l'a volé...

Rien de plus à dire...


...mais quand même, je ne peux pas résister: voici quelques images d'une sortie -la dernière avec mon vélo bleu acier- sur les routes de Fribourg et Berne, accroché aux roues de cyclistes aux jambes longilignes et bronzées, fonçant sur leurs machines en carbone pré-formé, allégé et génétiquement astiqué.

Nous voici en route pour Charmey, lâchés (déjà!) par le groupe de tête.


Au sommet du Jaun pass, regroupement général!


Arrivée au bord du Lac de Thun qui s'écoule en un flux tranquille et limpide vers les plaines du nord. Arrêt vin rouge et mignardises (on peut tout se permettre quand on est sportif).


Le lendemain, il fait beau. Résultat: un je-sais-quoi de contentement dans l'expression faciale et un manque total du sens du ridicule.


L'expression fanfaronne des sportifs sur l'image témoigne de la rudesse de l'effort accompli: messieurs, vous êtes complétement casqués!

The Danes are here!

Mid-March 09, still lots of the white stuff we like so much, bright hot sunshine, beautiful landscapes and a bunch of lively danish young scientists (sort of), coming straight from their school in Denmark, after 563 hours of bus-riding and 3 days non-stop partying in Geneva. Sounds gggooood? It was!

Charmey Event

Disons que c'était un truc de sponsors/grand public/ event/promotion et que quelques AMs de l'ASAM se sont bougés pour y aller jeter un oeil et prendre contact avec l'association Sentiers-Raquettes qui est vraiment devenue incontournable dans nos régions. L'idée: ces sentiers drainent tellement de monde qu'on aurait tort de se priver d'un tel réservoir de clients potentiels. Donc autant mettre nos frilosités au placard et aller voir ce qui se passe!


A propos de frileux, en voilà 2 (hello Bas, hello Vir) qui l'étaient pas: le matin, y faisait une de ces cramines j't'e'dis'pas! Déjà à Broc, y faisait -18 (C)!


On a fait un tour de 2 heures avec un groupe de lecteurs du Sillon Romand, chouette. Bon c'est pas le canada non plus sur ces sentiers damés-balisés, mais eh ... que la montagne est belle!


Ensuite, je me suis fait plaisir: en soirée, une virée dans les plaques à vent.
